6 Tips on Starting your Blog

Posted by Domz at 1/23/2014

The word "blogger" has a very complicated definition. But the most accepted is someone who creates unique and original contents with the objective of helping others through giving useful information, tutorials and entertainment. That's the common definition which can also be applied to describe a freelancer. But blogging is a long term career where in your articles can give you money over and over again unlike freelancers that they pay you once per unique article, period.

If you decided to choose blogging as a career, a hobby or a business, well you should read the following:

1. Consider your topic.

Plan for your niche and its title. It should be specific because the broader it gets, the harder for you to manage.  Not only that, people will find it difficult to search your site when they use search engines like Google. Choose topics you know you can handle and always integrate them with the latest issues on internet. For example if your topic is about cats, if possible you must have a cat. You can also consider talking about “most played cat games on mobile” or the latest inventions like robot cats. Do not just stick to home related topics.

2. Start with a sub domain.

Do not start a blog immediately using a top level domain rather choose a free subdomain. But before you create a one, check your preferred top level domain first if it’s still available. Your subdomain name should be similar to what you will buy later. There are many website providers you can start your blogging career. Choose the best you know and the easiest way to manage if you’re really a newbie. Know what they offer, their specialties and of course their pricing.

3. Experiment and design.

Create at least 5 articles and experiment with them. Learn how to adjust the body and side bar width for future widgets. Write down your categories and subcategories. Study the commenting system. Treat yourself as a guest and feel how your site looks like. Change theme if necessary. Remember there are things you should configure now which can't be modified once your site has visitors. Complete your design with easy navigation. Most importantly add pages like About Us, Contact Us and your Privacy Policy.

4. Buy a top level domain.

If you think you’re ready, you can now buy your own domain. If you have problems on buying online perhaps my other article can help, just click here. Choose a short, easy to remember domain that is related to your niche. You can now start writing real articles about your niche.

5. SEO management.

Ready to show your site to the world? Ok, start doing the basic SEO tips. You need to submit your site to Google, Bing and other directories. Create a Google Webmaster and Analytics for your site. Register to Alexa for your ranking assessment. Consider also submitting your RSS feed to FeedBurner and that’s it. You can optimize your site later once you gain an amount of visitors.

6. Start building your social network profile.

For more details about this, you can read my article entitled "3 Steps in Building Social network Profile" and "Social Networks and Bloggers".

Lastly, I would like to say do not rush things. Take one step at a day. The best thing you can do is to accomplish something and be patient with this early stage.

The things above are only summaries and you can find more ways to improve your blogging knowledge as you go. I can’t talk yet about monetizing your site because as of now I was newly approved by an ad server. If I succeeded then I can share my story.
